Why wiring is the question insurers care most about
Most features that complicate home insurance are liability questions — a pool, a trampoline, a dog. Wiring is different. Wiring is a fire risk, and fire is the peril that can produce a total loss of the building.
That changes how insurers respond. A liability concern can be handled with an exclusion, because the insurer can carve out one category of claim and write the rest. A fire risk can't be carved out in the same way, because fire is the core thing the policy exists to cover. So an insurer that isn't comfortable with your wiring usually declines the whole risk rather than limiting it.
This is why wiring questions appear early on most quote forms, including ours, and why a vague answer tends to slow everything down.
Knob-and-tube wiring
Knob-and-tube was the standard method of wiring US homes from roughly the 1880s to the 1940s, with some installations later than that. You can recognise it by ceramic knobs holding single insulated conductors away from framing, and ceramic tubes where wires pass through joists.
What insurers are actually worried about
- No ground conductor. K&T is a two-wire system, so there is no equipment grounding path — which matters for modern appliances and for anything with a three-prong plug.
- Ageing insulation. The rubber and cloth insulation becomes brittle with decades of heat cycling and can crumble when disturbed.
- Heat dissipation by design. K&T relies on air around the conductors to shed heat. When later owners blow insulation into the walls and ceilings, that design assumption is broken — this is one of the most common causes of a problem in an otherwise sound installation.
- Decades of amateur modification. Very few K&T systems are untouched. Splices into modern cable, often made without a junction box, are common and are frequently where faults occur.
- Load. A system designed for lighting and a radio is now running a kitchen.
What tends to be required
Insurer appetite for knob-and-tube ranges from cautious to absent. Some will not write a home with any active K&T circuits. Others will consider it with an electrician's report confirming the system is sound, no insulation is in contact with the conductors, and the load is appropriate.
Where K&T remains only in disconnected legacy runs — abandoned in place but no longer energised — insurers are generally far more relaxed, but you'll usually need documentation to prove it. "There's old wiring in the attic but nothing's connected to it" is a much better answer when an electrician has written it down.
Aluminium branch wiring
Aluminium branch circuit wiring was used widely in US homes from around 1965 to 1973, when copper prices were high. It is a different problem from knob-and-tube and, importantly, usually a more solvable one.
What goes wrong
The aluminium conductor itself is generally fine. The failures happen at the connections. Aluminium expands and contracts more than copper as it heats and cools, which can loosen terminations over years of use. It also oxidises, and aluminium oxide is a poor conductor, so resistance rises at exactly the point where the connection is already loosening. Higher resistance means more heat, which accelerates the cycle.
The result is a slow deterioration at outlets, switches and junctions rather than a sudden failure in the wall — which is why remediation focuses on connections rather than replacing the cable.
Remediation that insurers commonly accept
Because the problem is at the terminations, a full rewire is often unnecessary. Two approaches are widely recognised:
- COPALUM crimp connectors, which permanently join a short copper pigtail to the aluminium conductor using a specialised tool. This is generally regarded as the most thorough repair, but requires a certified installer and the tooling is not widely available.
- AlumiConn connectors, a lug-style connector that joins aluminium to copper pigtails. More widely available and often more practical to arrange.
What is generally not accepted is a standard twist-on wire connector used to pigtail aluminium to copper. It's a common DIY approach and an inspector will usually flag it.
This is the useful distinction
Homeowners often assume aluminium wiring means a rewire costing tens of thousands. In many cases insurers will accept properly documented connector remediation instead. If you've been told your home is uninsurable because of aluminium wiring, it is worth getting a second opinion — from an electrician and from another insurer.

Quote forms usually ask about the electrical panel separately from the wiring, and the two really are different questions. You can have modern copper wiring feeding an obsolete panel, or a recently replaced panel serving old circuits.
Insurers generally distinguish between a modern circuit breaker panel and an older fuse box. A fuse box isn't inherently dangerous, but it signals an installation that hasn't been updated in a long time, and fuses can be defeated by fitting a higher-rated fuse than the circuit is designed for — which removes the protection entirely.
Some specific panel brands from the 1950s to 1980s have well-documented reliability concerns and attract particular attention during underwriting. If your panel is original to a mid-century home, an electrician can tell you quickly whether it's one of them.
If you genuinely don't know what you have, say so rather than guessing. "Not sure" is an answer an underwriter can work with; a wrong answer is a misrepresentation.
How to approach the market with older wiring
- 1Find out what you actually have. An electrician's inspection gives you a document, and a document is what changes an underwriter's answer.
- 2Establish whether old wiring is active or abandoned in place. This distinction matters enormously and is often the difference between a decline and a policy.
- 3For aluminium, price connector remediation before assuming a full rewire. It is frequently the accepted fix.
- 4Ask insurers what they would need rather than just accepting a no. Many declines are conditional — "not as it stands" rather than "never".
- 5Compare widely. Appetite for older electrical systems varies more between insurers than almost any other risk factor.
- 6Keep the paperwork. An electrician's report, permits and photographs of completed work make the next renewal much easier than reconstructing the story from memory.

Often yes, but the market is much smaller and you should expect to provide an electrician's report. Insurers are considerably more comfortable where the K&T has been disconnected and left in place rather than remaining in active use.
Do I have to rewire the whole house to fix aluminium wiring?
